Kendrick Lamar made a rare daytime television appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show today to perform “These Walls” from To Pimp a Butterfly. The Compton emcee brought his own artistic flare to the set, joined by a dance couple and an artist painting the modern dance number.
Afterwards, Lamar talked collaborating with Taylor Swift on “Bad Blood” and his recent Generational Icon award from the state of California. “It means everything to me,” he said of the award. “I know it’s a lot of kids in my neighborhood watching TV and saying, ‘I wanna be a positive influence just like Kendrick Lamar or [anybody] out there doing something good for the culture and the music.”
The TDE member is personally influenced by his parents, whom he credits with inspiring him not to be a negative product of his environment. “They put something in my heart to do something more than what I was raised around.”
