Iggy Azalea is canceling shows left and right. Two weeks after she scrapped her first big tour, Azalea has announced that she will no longer headline Pittsburgh Pridefest this weekend amid protests to pull her from the lineup.
The Aussie announced on Twitter Monday that she was “truly disappointed” to cancel the show. “This has been a difficult decision as I truly support the event and the LGBTIQA communities,” wrote the rapper. “However, I feel my participation at this point would only serve to further distract from the true purpose of the event.”
Azalea’s performance was hit with backlash because the 25-year-old previously used homophobic language on social media. After organizers failed to cut her, several groups dropped out of Pridefest as a form of protest.
In her statement, Azalea admitted to making homophobic comments. “I am a firm believer in equality,” she said. “Unfortunately in the past as a young person, I used words I should not have. The last thing I want is for something so carelessly said to be interpreted as reflective of my character.
“I meant no harm and deeply regret ever uttering those words,” maintained Azalea. “As an adult I would never use them because I understand they play a detrimental role in the fight for issues that I do truly believe in.”
She closed with an apology to anyone she may “have offended or disappointed” and asked that her fans and friends still participate in Pridefest.
