YG Speaks Out for the First Time Since Shooting

"I'm hard to kill."

YG is in good spirits.

Seven days after the Compton rapper was shot in Studio City, Calif., he sat down with Billboard for an exclusive interview detailing what exactly went down that night after a late-night studio session. Contrary to previous reports, YG was only shot one time in the hip and was released the same night from a nearby hospital.

The 25-year-old rapper also previewed new material from his upcoming album, Still Krazy. The title is a proper follow-up to his celebrated album, My Krazy Life, that dropped in 2014. “A lot of artists drop they albums, and they wait two, three, four years to come again,” he says. “I’m coming.”

In the interview, which you can read excerpts of below, he stressed that the shooting was not gang-related. Authorities have not arrested anyone in connection to YG’s shooting, but he’s continuing to keep his head up and focus on making quality music for his fans.

What was going through your mind when it happened?

Survival. After I got shot, I’m telling everybody, “Take me to the hospital, because I can’t die.” We hop in my homie’s car and bam — we got in a car accident! We hit an island trying to avoid another car. We had to hop out of the totaled car, hop in another car. At the hospital we had to tell people, “Take me serious right now — you don’t even understand what’s going on.” It was wild.

How are you feeling now?

I’m good. I left the hospital that night, and the next day I went back to the studio. Nobody wanted me to go. My mama tells me, “What are you talking about ‘going to the studio?’” But you know, I got s**t to do — this s**t don’t stop for nobody. I came straight to the studio on my little crutches.

You’re a tough guy.

Yeah. I’m hard to kill.
