Nearly eight full years after his death, an in-depth Pimp C biography is officially on it's way. Sweet Jones: Pimp C’s Trill Life Story drops July 28 in digital and paperback formats on Amazon, Kindle, Apple iBooks, and at select retailers.
Penned by OZONE Magazine co-founder Julia Beverly, readers are heavily anticipating Sweet Jones, as pre-order copies sold out in less than a week.
The project is one that's special to Beverly and promises to display a different side of the
UGK member, born Chad Lamont Butler. “Pimp was someone who really touched people, not just through his music, but people that he encountered in everyday life because he was so passionate about everything,” Beverly tells BET.com. “His mom serves as sort of the narrator of the book, and I grew close to her throughout the process of researching. Having a personal connection to the subjects obviously gives you a deeper connection to the project as a whole. The relationship between Chad [Pimp] and his mom is the most intriguing part of the book, to me, and really shows another side of him beyond the rap persona."
The process involved trying moments as well. “I’ve always considered myself more of a photographer than a writer," she explains. "Creating a visual is a lot easier for me than putting words on paper. This project was a challenge, which was exactly what I needed. I think I became a much better writer in the process.”
Beverly's literary tribute features a compilation of interviews with friends and family members of the late recording artist, and collaborators like Too Short, 8Ball & MGJ, Jazze Pha, David Banner and Paul Wall. She will head out on a promo tour starting August 23.
