Nelly Explains the Need of His Reality Show in Hip Hop on The Breakfast Club

He speaks about his new single, Nellyville and more on The Breakfast Club.

Nelly is making his press rounds to support his new single, “The Fix,” which features Jeremih and a killer sample of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing.” He stopped by The Breakfast Club to talk about it, as well as touch on Nellyville, his reality television series that offers viewers a look into the personal life of the St. Louis rapper.

“I think for me, the whole basis of our show was to show this side” he says. “It didn't matter if you knew this side of me, it’s not a change. I’m raising my kids and letting you know that Nelly just don’t party every damn night, and this is what goes on. [I’m] bringing in decent human beings in society.”

He adds, “Now, if it was a different type of scenario, say, Love & Hip Hop, and things of that nature. That’s something different … For me, I just wanted to show something that wasn’t out there. Single father in hip hop. Doing what he’s supposed to be doing. We get so much negativity and we not there. Half the brothers I know in hip hop — they love being a father. They take pride in it, and I thought that should be shown.”

When asked about “The Fix,” one of the concerns brought up was sample clearance. In recent weeks, Robin Thicke and Timbaland are up against lawsuits pertaining to their songs, “Blurred Lines” and “Big Pimpin',” respectively. Nelly stresses there will be no headaches this time around.

“I share the same publisher as Mustard and things like that, so when I got the track from him … Ron Perry who is our publisher said it was already cleared. Before I do anything to this record, let me know if it’s all cool and it’s awesome.”
