Martina Davis-Correia, the sister of Georgia death row inmate Troy Davis, passed away Thursday from breast cancer. She was 44.

She had been instrumental in the fight to prove there was insufficient evidence to implicate her brother in the shooting death of an off-duty Savannah police officer in 1989. Her efforts had captured the support of human rights groups, political figures and other supporters around the world. Troy Davis was convicted of the crime in 1991 and was ultimately executed by the State of Georgia on Sept. 21, 2011.
