A charred human body was found in the ashes of a burned cabin where police say ex-Los Angeles cop Christopher Dorner was holed up after a shootout with police.

Although it may be days before there is conclusive proof that the body is Dorner's, reports say that several signs suggest that the manhunt for the rogue former police officer may be over.

Dorner is accused of killing three people in California last week and is also blamed for the shooting death of a deputy after Tuesday's shootout.

After a tense seven days on the run, news broke Tuesday afternoon that Dorner, 33, was believed to be "pinned down" about seven miles south of Big Bear Lake. Dorner had barricaded himself inside a cabin and was believed to be armed.

The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department says reports of a carjacking and home invasion by a man resembling Dorner led cops to the area around 12:30 p.m. PST this afternoon. Hundreds of rounds were reportedly fired between the suspect and police before he barricaded himself in the cabin.

"Until this guy is in handcuffs and until he is in custody, our guys are not going to rest," said Los Angeles Police Department Commander Andrew Smith at a press conference Tuesday evening. In a message to Dorner, Smith said, "Enough is enough. It's time to turn yourself in, it's time to stop the bloodshed and let this event be over."

A SWAT team had surrounded and pumped gas into the cabin. They blasted the message "Surrender or come out!" over a loudspeaker in an attempt to get him to surrender.

Dorner was an officer with the LAPD and had served in the U.S. Navy. In a manifesto posted to his Facebook page, he threatened to wage “unconventional and asymmetrical” warfare against the police, naming officers on his hit list. He said his rage stemmed from discrimination that he experienced from childhood up until being fired from the LAPD in 2008.

Dorner has been on the run since Feb. 6 after he was linked to the killings of a former police captain's daughter and her fiance. Dorner tried to steal a boat in San Diego to escape to Mexico and later opened fire on two patrol cars, shooting three officers and killing one, writes the Associated Press.
