The satirical newspaper deleted a tweet after many expressed that it was inappropiate.
This year Quvenzhané Wallis became the youngest nominee for the Best Actress award at the Oscars for her performance in the film Beasts of the Southern Wild. At the age of 9, she has already accomplished something many actors dream of.
But some of that shine was overshadowed last night after The Onion tweeted a vulgar comment about the child star. The humor newspaper sent out this tweet at 8:49 p.m. PT, "Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c--t, right? #Oscars2013."
It has since been deleted.
Many demanded that The Onion make an apology. A trending topic called "#UnfollowTheOnion" was also started asking anyone following to unsubscribe from their feed.
Marc Lamont Hill was outraged by the comment and wrote, "Really hope The Onion apologizes. Yes, I get satire. I'm a huge Onion fan. But this was way past the boundaries. She's 9."
Image activist Michaela Angela Davis also tweeted, "this @TheOnion incident seems like the #SandyHook of the demeaning & degrading of black girls-the awful edge-the outrage & enough place."
The Onion's CEO issued an apology on Facebook on Monday afternoon.
