This Day in Black History: March 3, 1988

Juanita Kidd Stout becomes the first Black woman appointed to Pennsylvania's State Supreme Court.

Juanita Kidd Stout was born on March 7, 1919 in Wewoka, Oklahoma. She started reading at the age of 2 and her love for learning led her down a path dedicated to the legal profession.

She became the first Black woman appointed to the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court on March 3, 1988.

She began her college career at 16, attending Lincoln University in Jefferson, Missouri, an HBCU. She later transferred to the University of Iowa, where she received her bachelor's degree in music. She received two law degrees from Indiana University.

Kidd practiced law in the "city of brotherly Love" and became the assistant district attorney in 1955. After years of dedication to her law career, she was given the prestigious honor of serving on the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court.

She died of leukemia on Aug. 21, 1998.
