Experts Decipher Trayvon 911 Tapes

Audio experts have offered different opinions of how many voices are heard on the 911 recordings in the Trayvon Martin case.

Audio experts have drawn different conclusions regarding the source of the screams that were recorded in 911 calls in the seconds before the killing of Trayvon Martin.
One expert in a New Jersey-based company said in a report that the screams came from 17-year-old Martin. Another expert, based in Florida, said that the shouts were a combination of sounds that came from both Martin and George Zimmerman, the one-time neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed the unarmed teenager a year ago.
The teenager’s parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, have maintained that the screams heard in the recording were those of their son. On the other hand, Zimmerman’s father has stated in court that he believes the sounds were from his son.
The experts were hired by the attorneys for Zimmerman, who is awaiting trial next month on charges of second-degree murder in the death of Martin. Zimmerman has maintained that he shot the teenager in self-defense while fending off an attack.
The recordings were the result of emergency calls placed by neighbors who overheard the interaction in a gated community in Sanford, Florida, a suburb of Orlando.
Meanwhile, Mark O’Mara, Zimmerman’s attorney, has asked a judge to rule on whether the audio analysis may be admissible during the trial. O’Mara explained that the analysis of the recordings could create a prejudice in the minds of jurors.
"Counsel has significant and legitimate concerns that such evidence will confuse the issues for this jury to decide, and it may well mislead the jury in this area of inquiry," O'Mara said in the filing.
