Father and Son Will Graduate From Morehouse Together

Dorian Joyner Sr. and his son Dorian Joyner Jr. will graduate together from Morehouse College this weekend.

President Barack Obama will be Morehouse College's commencement speaker this year, an event that is sure to stir attention to the historically all-Black male college.
But an inspiring story of father and son students, who will both receive diplomas from the school this weekend, also makes this year's ceremony special.
Dorian Joyner Sr. started Morehouse in 1984 but did not finish. He decided it was time to complete his degree three years ago and by this point his son, Dorian Joyner Jr., was a freshman.

Joyner Jr. admitted it was a shock to him at first. As any teenager who goes off to college, he was excited to feel some freedom from their parents.

"I said, 'Oh, you're coming back to visit some of your friends?'" he remembered in an interview with NBC. "And [Dorian Senior] said, 'No, I'm coming back to be a student.' I said can you repeat that?"

But being close to each other during this experience was beneficial to them both.

11alive.com reports:

We used to have a support system. Sometimes he would come to my room to ask about a problem or a class or a professor to take," he said.

Daddy Dorian, who allows his son to call him by his first name on campus, said the two have their own friends and schedules, so their paths rarely intersect.

But after three years of learning from and pushing each other, the two have a bond that goes deeper than father and son.

"We're Morehouse brothers," the two said proudly.

Dorian Senior plans to pursue a law degree and eventually become a judge. His son has applied for the Peace Corps and hopes to spend two years traveling before attending film school.
