This Day in Black History: June 21, 1990

Little Richard was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on June 21, 1990.

Widely regarded as the architect of rock and roll, Little Richard was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on June 21, 1990.

A pioneer at his craft and image, Little Richard is known for his unapologetic style of wild piano pounding to hits like “Tutti Frutti,” “Long Tall Sally,” “Jenny Jenny” and “Good Golly Miss Molly,” while wearing a sequined vest, and a full face of makeup.

Little Richard emerged as an artist in the 1950s when racial tension in the U.S. rang high but his boundary-breaking persona and music transcended color lines. Little Richard’s influence spans beyond succeeding American pop classics like Liberace and the Beatles. It touches generations of rock and roll fans to come.
