First Lady to Host "State Dinner" for Kid Chefs

Junior chefs from across the nation touting their best recipes will meet at the White House next week for the second kids' "state dinner."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Junior chefs from across the nation touting their best recipes will meet at the White House next week for the second kids' "state dinner."

Michelle Obama will welcome 54 children to the executive mansion on July 9 for creating winning recipes as part of a healthy lunch contest. The youngsters will dine on some of the top dishes at their "state dinner" luncheon and tour the White House vegetable garden. "The X Factor" alum singer Rachel Crow will also perform.

Some of the winning recipes include sushi salad, sweet potato turkey sliders, hidden veggie lasagna, salmon fried rice, garden stir-fry, chicken masala wraps and confetti spring rolls.

More than 1,300 children ages 8 to 12 entered the second Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, which asked them and their parents to create nutritious lunch dishes representing each of the food groups.

The challenge, created by Epicurious.com, supports the first lady's "Let's Move" initiative to address childhood obesity with healthier eating and physical fitness. It is a partnership among Mrs. Obama, the food website and the Education and Agriculture departments.

A free downloadable and printable e-cookbook of the recipes will be available later this month online.
