Homeowner Charged in Michigan Porch Shooting

Prosecutors on Friday announced charges of second-degree murder against Detroit homeowner Theodore P. Wafer in the death of a Renisha McBride, 19, who was shot in the face on his porch.

DETROIT (AP) — Prosecutors have charged a suburban Detroit homeowner in the death of a 19-year-old woman who was shot in the face on his porch.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Friday that 54-year-old Theodore P. Wafer of Dearborn Heights faces a charge of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Renisha McBride early on Nov. 2.

McBride was shot after police say they believe she was involved in a car accident nearby in Detroit and family members say she likely approached his home for help.

The Associated Press has left several messages with his attorney.

The shooting has prompted calls for justice and investigation from civil rights groups that say race was a factor. McBride was an African-American, Wafer's race has not been revealed by authorities.
