You can't touch this record. MC Hammer and Capitol Records released the best-selling rap album of all time, Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em, on Feb. 12, 1990. To date, the album has sold more than 10 million copies and is recognized as a pioneer album in hip hop history. The album paved the way for rap to be recognized in mainstream music and pop culture.
The album, which featured the Grammy Award winning hit “U Can’t Touch This,” spent a record-breaking 21 weeks on the top Billboard R&B and Billboard 200 charts. Although it was his third album, Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em helped to establish MC Hammer as an integral member of the music industry.
Please Hammer, Don't Hurt 'Em became Hammer’s moniker, while the phrase “Hammer Time” from the song “U Can’t Touch This" became a common hip hop culture phrase. "U Can’t Touch This" was also featured in a host of movies and TV shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990), Doogie Howser, M.D. (1992), Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood (1996) and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003).
