The many startups and accelerators popping up across the African continent have attracted much attention from stateside techies and major corporations. However, what have yet to be highlighted are the entrepreneurs championing African innovation in our own backyard.
A three-day celebration of bridging the Atlantic and connecting creators across the globe, the event kicked off in D.C. on April 26 with a hackathon for RevisionPrep.
"It's great to see entrepreneurs who can talk about what they've created but also tie in their passion and a larger mission," Chika Umeadi, tiphub co-founder and community manager, told BET.com in an email.
Students, coders, engineers and business-development professionals formed teams to assist the youth-led startup in identifying opportunities and challenges in market size, thinking through curriculum materials, conceptualizing user-experience and predicting back-end data-collection needs.
Also included in the weekend were the launch of AfricaDevJobs, a social online platform for recruitment, networking and information surrounding African business development, and a fireside chat with Thoughtworks' Enyo Kumahor.
BET.com spoke with Amanda Spann, co-founder and Marketing Director of tiphub, about the accelerator’s long-term goals. In addition to introducing emerging and “game-changing" technology trends to entrepreneurs looking toward Africa, Spann and her colleagues also intend to "catalyze people to action."
"Through tiphub and the culmination of events hosted through D.C. Tech Afrique, we hope to be the spark that stimulates collaboration, education and inspiration for entrepreneurs both on the continent and within the African diaspora,” Spann said.
"We firmly believe that our communities already have all the innate know-how, intelligence and fortitude to lead the next wave of innovation and we hope to empower our innovators towards action."
