The computer science major never expected her father to join her on her big day.
As she stepped on stage to accept her diploma earlier this week, Ruby Robinson received an additional prize.
Moments after she was presented her degree, the Columbia University Engineering School graduating senior was surprised with a huge hug and “congratulations" from her father, a U.S. Army captain currently on active duty. Captain Keith Robinson had previously told his daughter that he would be unable to attend.
“To have him here in the flesh means so much to me,” Ruby said in a video by Columbia’s Office of Communications and Public Affairs. “I didn’t expect it all. I didn’t think it was possible. I’m so happy about it.”

Cpt. Robinson, who has been deployed for the past six months in northern Afghanistan, was able to receive a leave from his unit and flew 14.5 hours from Kuwait to Washington, D.C., to Denver, ultimately arriving in New York for the big day.
“I haven’t had time to stop and think about it myself,” Cpt. Robinson said. “But when I saw her, it was like … it was all worth it.”
