NAACP Requests FBI Join Investigation of Lennon Lacy Death

The 17-year-old was found hanging from a tree in North Carolina.

The North Carolina chapter of the NAACP has requested that the FBI join the investigation into the death of North Carolina teen Lennon Lacy, according to The Guardian. Lacy was found hanging from a swing set in a predominantly white neighborhood not far from his home in late August.
“Given evidence uncovered by the (North Carolina) NAACP, there are several other possible explanations for his death besides a simple suicide,” the organization's letter to the federal prosecutor reads.

The autopsy concluded that Lacy died from asphyxia due to hanging and that there was no indication of foul play. The NAACP has hired a pathologist to study the autopsy and an attorney, Heather Rattelade, to check into how the investigation was conducted.

"I cannot tell you why minimum protocols were not followed, but that is a large part of the reason why we have been compelled to ask the department of justice and the FBI to carry out its own investigation into what happened to Lennon Lacy,” Rattelade said.
The teen’s mother, Claudia Lacy, feels she was interrogated and that law enforcement was looking to stick to suicide as cause of death.
“I just want to know what happened to my 17-year-old son," she said at a news conference. "All I want is justice.”
