This Day in Black History: Feb. 7, 1984

Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album is inducted into Guinness Book of World Records on Feb. 7, 1984.

The King of Pop set a world record when his sixth studio album, Thriller, reached record-high international and domestic sales. On Feb. 7, 1984, it was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for best-selling album of all time.
Its worldwide success made it one of the best-selling albums in the world. For weeks after Thriller’s studio release, it would remain No. 1 on music charts across the globe — from Canada to Japan and Australia to Italy.

The album included hits such as "Thriller," “P.Y.T.” and “Beat It.”

Along with a Guinness record, the album went on to score eight Grammy wins, including Album of the Year, and eight American Music Awards in 1984.

In 2009, the Recording Industry Association of America declared the album 29x platinum, with more than 29,000,000 copies sold in the United States alone.
