India Kager, 28, and Angelo Perry, 35, died after police fired 30 rounds at the couple while they were in a vehicle with their infant, who survived the shooting in Virginia Beach, Va., on Saturday. The officers have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation takes place, the Washington Post reports.
Authorities say that Perry was armed and was a person of interest in a planned homicide, according to Virginia Beach Police Chief Jim Cervera. They had been following Kager's car before they approached the vehicle while Kager parked at a 7-Eleven. Perry fired four shots toward officers, authorities say. Cops fired back and within 15 seconds they had shot up the vehicle. None of the cops were hurt in the attack.
They did not notice the infant in the back of the car until after the shooting, officials report.
Kager's family does not believe that she was tied to any of Perry's alleged activities. Kager is a Navy veteran.
“Did they find any weapons on India? Did she pose a threat?," Kager's mother asked, according to the Washington Post. "Why did [police] shoot into a car with a baby and woman who had nothing to do with their investigation?”
