For many, Halloween is a chance to dress sexy and troll for candy, but a select few also look upon it as a day to suspend common sense and tact when it comes to cultural offense. Case in point: a Florida high school student who tweeted a photo of herself in a homemade Nicki Minaj costume, complete with blackface.
Thankfully, someone was paying attention: soon after the picture was posted, Twitter went crazy. “I'm honestly amazed by people who wear blackface in 2015. It takes an absurd amount of disrespect to do something so historically hateful," wrote one user, while another stated, “Getting dress [sic] up as a black girl is totally ok? It's not ok ever.”
This latest incident comes just days after an Alabama teacher came under fire for a Kanye West 'fit which similarly went too far. Earlier this year, UCLA’s Sigma Pi Epsilon fraternity and Alpha Phi sorority came under fire after hosting a Yeezy-themed party and students posted photos of themselves in blackface on social media.
As for the Florida student, she has since taken down her post and publicly apologized by saying, "I sincerely apologize for my actions. I did not mean to offend anyone with my homecoming costume." Her Twitter account has also been deleted.
