Update: Police Say Tyshawn Lee, 9, Was Lured Into Alley Before He Was Shot

Pierre Stokes, Tyshawn's father, allegedly has gang ties.

Update — Nov. 6, 2015: Chicago police superintendent Garry McCarthy said that Tyshawn Lee was "lured" into an alley an killed because his father allegedly had gang ties, according to AP.

McCarthy called it the "most abhorrent, cowardly, unfathomable crime that I've witnessed in 35 years of policing."

Tyshawn's father, Pierre Stokes, says that police have spent more time asking him questions than finding out who shot and killed his son.

"I answered every question they asked me," he told reporters. "They're not asking me questions that I know. I don't know the questions that they asked me."

Nine-year-old Tyshawn Lee was found in an alley just a few doors away from his grandmother’s house on Monday afternoon, the Chicago Tribune reports. At 4:15 p.m., an argument broke out in the alley in the Gresham neighborhood of Chicago. Lee was shot several times in his upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"It's unclear if this was a targeted incident or a tragic case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time," Chief of Detectives Dean Andrews said.

Tyshawn was on his way to his grandmother’s house, where his mother was due to pick him up later in the evening. "I saw the body in the alley. He was lying in blood," said Tyshawn’s grandmother Bertha Lee. "But I didn't see his face."

Bertha said her grandson loved to play basketball and liked Nintendo. A basketball was found near his body. His mother, Karla, said he had dreams of playing in the NBA.

“Mom, when I get older I’m going to take care of you, I’m going to get you a new house,” she said he once told her. "He's a good kid. He didn't deserve that, he didn't deserve that," she said through tears. "Emotions? They're gone. I don't have my baby no more."

The police are investigating the case and are checking for surveillance video.
