Texas Student Suspended for Trying to Save Classmate's Life

The 12-year-old girl was also given 30 days of alternative schooling.

A 12-year-old Texas student was just trying to do the right thing, only to be met with punishment. The Grio reports that Indiyah Rush was suspended from school after offering another girl her inhaler who was gasping and weezing in class.

Rush was sent to the principal's office where she was given several days of at-home suspension and 30 days of alternative school.

"I mean, they punished her twice," Monique Rush, Indiyah's mother, said. "They suspended her on top of sending her to alternative school. I mean, how could you do a kid like that?"

According to the school's stipultations, the 30 days of alternative school is standard when a controlled substance — such as an inhaler — is involved in the situation. There, however, will be a hearing to further examine the facts of this case. While 30 days is the maximum punishment for a case like this, it could be cut down or even wiped away completely depending on what is determined in the findings.

"It's a prescription and one student's severity with asthma may not mirror that of the girl who let the other borrow hers and that could have resulted in some pretty significant issues," said Chris Moore, Garland ISD spokeman.

Indiyah, however, was just innocently trying to lend a helping hand and doesn't understand why she is being punished so severely. "I was just trying to save her life," she said. "I didn't think I was trying to do anything bad."
