Jamie Gilt got the surprise of her life when a bullet pierced through the driver’s seat in her truck while she was on her way to pick up a horse.
The 31-year-old Jacksonville, Florida, woman was shot in her back by her 4-year-old son, who found a loaded pistol lying in the backseat of her vehicle.
Ironically, just 24 hours before the unfortunate incident occurred, Gilt, a high-profile pro-gun activist, boasted on Facebook about her tot’s shooting skills. “Even my 4 year old gets jacked up to target shoot with the .22,” she wrote on the now private page, Jamie Gilt for Gun Sense.
After the bullet passed through the seat and her body, Gilt got the attention of a Sheriff’s deputy passing by and alerted him to the emergency.
“The only other occupant of the vehicle was the victim’s 4-year-old son, who was unharmed,” Putman County Sheriff’s office spokesman Joseph Wells said.
Gilt is expected to make a full recovery, but may face criminal charges if the State Attorney’s Office determines there was negligence on how her son, who was also reportedly not strapped to his booster seat, obtained the firearm.
