Marsha Gay Reynolds, a JetBlue flight attendant and former Miss Jamaica, has been arrested for using her profession and airport credentials to try and get 70 pounds of cocaine from Los Angeles to New York. She was caught on Wednesday at JFK Airport in New York after slipping her contraband past the TSA at LAX, but not before she tried to make a run for it.
Reynolds has been charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine. According to an FBI affidavit, the cocaine was discovered in her carry on bag during a random search and screening. As a TSA agent led her to be searched, she reportedly made a call on her cellphone in which she sounded to be speaking in a foreign language, before kicking off her heels and making a run for it.
She got away, too: the TSA agent didn't pursue her because his primary concern was the bags Reynolds was carrying. Her abandoned luggage contained 11 individually wrapped packages, labeled "Big Ranch," that were then taken to a Police Forensic Science Division. It was there that the packages tested positive for cocaine.
Following Marshall's smuggling attempt, LAX Police Officers Association President Marshall McClain is promoting stricter screening practices. "Flight attendants and other crew members are not normally subjected to searches, but this is a perfect example of why Los Angeles airports need 100 percent screening of all passengers and airport employees."
Amazingly, Reynolds' defense attorney is now claiming she had no idea the contraband was in her bag. He doesn't appear to have an excuse as to why she fled from security at JFK, though.
