[Watch] Teacher Fired for Sliding Into Student's DMs

We doubt the messages were about homework.

Good teachers get involved with their students, but a Tennessee special education teacher and football coach may have taken it a bit too far.

LeRico Mathis has been fired from his position at Houston Middle School after text messages were found on a student's phone from a number that belongs to the teacher.

According to WREG, the conversation was deemed inappropriate and not related to school, and while Germantown, Tennessee, police have not recovered enough evidence to arrest the man, the Germantown Municipal Schools decided that they felt the texts were grounds to fire Mathis.

Police did, however, release a statement regarding the incident:

It read, "The Germantown Police Department received a complaint regarding Houston Middle School teaching assistant Lerico Mathis on February 25th, 2016. The complaint involved allegations of inappropriate texting between Mr. Mathis and an underage student. An investigation into this matter yielded no criminal charges. As part of our investigation a referral was made to the Tennessee Department of Child Services. Pursuant to Tennessee law this report will be maintained confidential."

Parents of the school's students chimed in. "You need to know what's going on in your child's life," one said. "If it's inappropriate behavior, we need to know about it. I'm glad the parent [of the child who received the texts] caught it."

"Of course, it bothers me. I haven't heard anything about that. First I'm hearing of it," said another parent.

Parents continue to ask for the police to hand over the official report, but up to this point, they have not agreed to do so. It appears that while Mathis may not have broken any laws, he certainly broke the trust of the educating community in Germantown, Tennessee.
