[Watch] Woman's Grocery Run Takes a Violent and Deadly Turn

"There was blood everywhere," says one witness.

Imagine running out for milk and getting caught up in a domestic violence scuffle that turns deadly.
Stephen Schmidt, pictured above, has been charged with murder and attempted murder after stabbing his ex-wife and two other men in the aisle of a Hawaii supermarket on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred when Schmidt reportedly approached his ex-wife, Kehau Farias, and the man she was with and began arguing with them in the supermarket aisle. As the argument escalated, Schmidt took out a knife and stabbed Farias, as well as two men who tried to intervene.

All three victims were taken to the hospital, and while the two men are expected to recover, Farias died shortly after she arrived.

Maui News interviewed witness Alan Sevilla, who recounted the grisly scene. "There was a lot of blood," he said. "A lot of blood."

Maui Police Department announced that Schmidt was taken into custody after he fled from police. His bail is set at $3 million.

Foodland, the supermarket in which the crime occurred, issued a statement about the tragic incident.

"All of us at Foodland are shocked and saddened by the tragic incident that took place at Foodland Kehalani yesterday," the statement read. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families and friends." It continued to say the store is "cooperating fully with Maui police and investigators... Our store will remain closed today, and will reopen tomorrow after a meeting and blessing with our employees."

They supermarket thanked the employees who acted courageously while handling the violent situation, and said they will offer support for employees who were at the store when the stabbing took place.
