Members of the Omaha Police Department are mourning the loss of a furry friend who won’t be forgotten thanks to his Twitter page.

Known as @OPDSquirrel on the social media site, the department’s nutty friend was found dead in the headquarters’ parking lot in downtown Omaha on Tuesday.

Officer Michael Bossman announced the death to squirrely’s over 350 Twitter followers. By Friday, his followers increased to 425.

“We are sad to announce that @OpdSquirrel has been found dead in the parking lot,” Bossman tweeted. “We are not investigating.”

OPDSquirrel’s wife wrote a note of thanks to fans, friends and loved ones.

“From Mrs @OpdSquirrel – this is a sad day – thanks for all the kinds words. He will be sorely missed by our 35 children and I,” the comical tweet read. “Thanks to @OPDOfcBossman and @OPDSgtMenning for all the love. Give extra goodies to your backyard squirrel friends in lieu of flowers.”
