[Watch] Heartbreaking Video of Houston Flood Victim Depicts Her Final Moments
Despite warnings not to drive into high floodwaters, another Houston resident drowned in her SUV.
Video captured Claudia Melgar’s final moments as she was frantically trying to escape her Dodge Durango after driving into a submerged underpass with 17 feet of rising waters.
The 25-year-old died at approximately 6 a.m. Monday morning after driving around a tow truck, which was blocking the flooded road. She could be seen turning on her cellphone’s flashlight in the video released by the Harris County Toll Road Authority.
In a matter of seconds the light went out as Melgar’s car was completely submerged and she was unable to escape.
Last Tuesday, 36 hours after her death, rescue workers were finally able to reach her car and pull her body out after pumping massive amounts of water from the road’s exit.
Melgar was one of the eight victims who lost their lives while rain pummeled the Houston area last week.
The tragic loss of life is a reminder of the importance of taking the advice to not travel during such violent conditions.
