A child's encounter with a family pet nearly turned into tragedy in New Jersey over the weekend when a pitbull attacked a three-year-old girl.

According to ABC7, Dwyane Harper discovered his girlfriend's granddaughter Janaya Everett covered in blood after a loud commotion and barking at their home. "The baby was laying on the floor bloody with her scalp all messed up and just a mess...horrible, horrible thing," he said.
Harper says the toddler was attacked by one of two pit bull mixes living in the home, which somehow escaped from the basement and snuck into the room when the girl's grandmother stepped out.
"The child was just laying on the ground helpless. Like I thought the baby was dead, but apparently not," said an eyewitness, who called the cops and summoned EMTs to the scene.
"When they took the baby out of the house, one of the EMTs took the baby in his arms. That was good he didn't waste time for no stretcher or none of that. He just took the baby," the eyewitness added.
Everett was rushed to University Hospital, where she immediately underwent surgery, but is expected to make a full recovery. As for the dogs, they won't make it. They were both removed from the home and will most likely be put down.
