Hasn't he done enough damage?
Social pariah George Zimmerman is making news again, just days after news broke of his attempt to auction off the gun he used to kill Trayvon Martin in 2012. This time, Zimmerman gave an interview criticizing Martin's parents, and ultimately blamed their parenting skills for the death of their son.
"They didn't raise their son right," Zimmerman told the Daily Beast. "He attacked a complete stranger and attempted to kill him." He added, "Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin did everything they could to capitalize on her son's death. She was never a mother figure to him." He also attacked Trayvon's father, "Tracy Martin couldn't have cared less about their son. He treated him like a dog without a leash."
Zimmerman continued, "Sure, I'm sorry for any parents that has lost a child," he said. "That being said, I also believe it's their duty to have an internal dialogue to see what they should have done better and what they should have done appropriately."
He also blamed Trayvon's family for his recent decision to sell the gun he used to kill him. "If I have to live my life and if I have to go about my business as a normal person, then I would do that... I'm not afforded that luxury anymore," he said. "The media, the masses. The Fulton-Martin family. They took that away from me."
The comments are egregious for more reasons than one can count, but especially considering Zimmerman has himself been trying everything he can to profit off the tragedy of Martin's death. On the auction page where he listed the murder weapon, Zimmerman wrote, "Prospective bidders, I am honored and humbled to announce the sale of an American Firearm Icon." Adding, "The firearm for sale is the firearm that was used to defend my life and end the brutal attack from Trayvon Martin on 2/26/2012."
People have taken to Twitter to express their disgust for Martin's killer:
White privilege is George Zimmerman living & being free, while Sybrina Fulton & Tracy Martin continue to mourn & be taunted by the system.— Jayson L. Mack (@JMack33) May 12, 2016
if black people were as violent as people assume, don't y'all think George Zimmerman would be dead by now— black bruce wayne (@NathanZed) May 12, 2016
Tell George Zimmerman that I said I will buy the gun from him. Cash money. He has to deliver it to me in person though.— Blédakiss (@ChefRoble) May 14, 2016
George Zimmerman fans are mad about Racist McShootface. You defend a man who stalked and killed an unarmed teen. You don't get to be angry.— Sherri Shavon (@sherrishavon) May 13, 2016
Zimmerman says that a portion of whatever he sells the gun for will go toward fighting what he calls violence by the Black Lives Matter movement against law enforcement, as well as combating anti-gun rhetoric that has been pushed by presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
The listing ended with a Latin phrase, "If you want peace, prepare for war."
