As The Nation Mourns, Names of Victims Have Been Released

A student, an accountant, a bouncer, and a tourist were just some of the slain.

The Orlando shooting at Pulse night club resulted in the deaths of 50 people, including the shooter and 53 injured people. All 49 victims have been removed from the night club and almost all of them have been identified by officials; however, the names will only be released after police officers have contacted the families of the victims.

Right now, 43 people remain in the hospital in critical condition, and more information will be made available after scheduled surgeries and treatments.

The city of Orlando has released the names of the victims whose families have been reached. So far, here are the victims who were killed during the shooting:

Stanley Almodovar III, 23 years old

Luis Omar Ocasio-Capo, 20 years old

Juan Ramon Guerrero, 22 years old

Eric Ivan Ortiz-Rivera, 36 years old

Peter O. Gonzalez-Cruz, 22 years old

Luis S. Vielma, 22 years old

Kimberly Morris, 37 years old

Eddie Jamoldroy Justice, 30 years old

Darryl Roman Burt II, 29 years old

Deonka Deidra Drayton, 32 years old

Alejandro Barrios Martinez, 21 years old

Anthony Luis Laureanodisla, 25 years old

Jean Carlos Mendez Perez, 35 years old

Franky Jimmy Dejesus Velazquez, 50 years old

Amanda Alvear, 25 years old

Martin Benitez Torres, 33 years old

Specific information on several of the victims has also been released. Here is what we know of the victims at this point:

Edward Sotomayor Jr., 34, was nicknamed “Top Hat Eddie,” by many of his friends because of his love for black hats. During many social media tributes to Sotomayor, his friends used emojis of black hats. He worked for Al and Chuck Travel, a company dedicated to providing vacations to members of the LGBT community. The owner of the company, Al Ferguson, said that he was at the hospital with Sotomayor’s family. In speaking of the death of his employee, Ferguson said that Sunday was “one of the saddest days of my life.”

Stanley Almodovar III, was a 23-year-old pharmacy technician. He was described as someone who loved his family and was always bright and bubbly. He posted a video to social media of his laughing on his way to the club. His mother told the Orlando Sentinel that she had made his tomato and cheese dip for when he returned, but she knew he would never get to eat that when she received a phone call in the middle of the night.

Luis Omar Ocasio-Capo is believed to be the youngest victim of the shooting. The 20-year-old was a dancer and barista at the Kissimmee Starbucks, according a victim dedicated blog

Juan Ramon Guerrero, 22, had only recently come out to his family this year. Juan’s cousin, Robert Guerrero, said that when he came out, his family was extremely accepting of him and his boyfriend, Drew Leinonen. Guerrero had gone to the club with Leinonen, whose family says is still unaccounted for.

Eric Ivan Ortiz-Rivera had moved from Puerto Rico to Orlando in hopes of starting a better life. His former roommate, Colon Gomez, said that Eric was not really a club person and rarely involved himself in that scene. However, on that night, the 36-year-old had gone to a friend’s housewarming party that eventually moved to Pulse.

Peter O. Gonzalez-Cruz, 22, worked at a UPS in Orlando. He attended high school in New Jersey, and his friends and family mourned him on social media.

Luis S. Vielma, 22, worked at Universal Orlando Resort where he operated the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride. He was a student at Seminole State College of Florida. J.K. Rowling tweeted, “Luis Vielma worked on the Harry Potter ride at Universal. He was 22 years old. I can't stop crying.” 

Kimberly Morris, 37, was a bouncer at Pulse. She had recently moved from Hawaii to Orlando in order to help her family. She loved playing basketball and MMA fighting. Her ex-girlfriend, Starr Shelton, said, “She was so excited. She'd just started working there and told me how she was thrilled to get more involved in the LGBT community there.”

Eddie Jamoldroy Justice was a 30-year-old accountant who lived in downtown Orlando. During the shooting, Justice had run into the bathroom of the club where he texted his mother. He sent a text that read, “Mommy I love you. In club they shooting.” His mother then tried to call her son, and there was no answer. She then sent, “U ok” to which he replied, “Trapp in bathroom.” Eventually she received a text that read “He’s coming. I’m gonna die.” His mother called authorities and let them know of her son’s location.

Anthony Luis Laureanodisla, 25, was originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico. Anthony performed as a drag artist in Orlando.

Jean Carlos Mendez Perez, 35, and Luis Daniel Wilson-Leon, 37, dated and they were a couple who attended Pulse together. They were both killed during the shooting.

Amanda Alvear, 25, attended Pulse with friends. Alvear posted a Snapchat video of herself with friends dancing and having fun in the club.

Mercedez Marisol Flores, 26, was originally from Queens, N.Y., and relocated to Davenport, Florida. She had worked at Target and had studied at Valencia Community College.

Martin Benitez Torres, 33, was originally from San Juan and was in Orlando with his family. He had just arrived in Orlando that day, and had posted several videos on social media, documenting his day.

Franky Jimmy Dejesus Velazquez, 50, was also originally from San Juan and attended Inter American University of Puerto Rico. He worked at Forever 21 and lived in Orlando.

Xavier Emmanuel Serrano Rosado, 35, leaves behind a young son. He was a dancer and had worked as a night entertainer at Splash Bar in Panama City Beach.

Simon Adrian Carrillo Fernandez, 31, and Oscar A. Aracena-Montero, 26, were two very good friends who attended the club together. They were killed inside during the shooting.

Gilberto Ramon Silva Menendez, 25, was originally from Manati, Puerto Rico. He worked as a sales associate at Speedway and studied health care management at Ana G. Mendez University in Orlando.

Enrique L. Rios Jr. was a 25-year-old from Brooklyn, New York. He was in Orlando for a vacation. His mother, Gertrude Merced, wrote an appeal for her son’s body to be returned to New York City. Merced said, “My son was a good kid. He was just having a great time on his vacation.”

Miguel Angel Honorato, 30, was from Apopka, Florida. He worked for FajitaMex Mexican Catering. His brother, Enrique Ezequiel Honorato, posted on Facebook, “R.I.P Brother Miguel Honorato, man I would’ve never thought this would happen to you.”

Javier Jorge-Reyes, 40, worked as a supervisor at Gucci. He was originally from Puerto Rico and studied at the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. He was known by his friends as Harvey George Kings.
