Nakia Jones is a local police officer in Cleveland. After watching the video of Alton Sterling being killed in Louisiana, Jones took to Facebook to record her own response of the shooting.
Jones speaks about repeatedly watching the video and becoming furious. She discussed how she feels torn between being a Black person in America and being an officer of the law. She said that she became a police officer “to make a difference in people’s lives.”
However, after seeing a video like the shooting of Sterling, she sees the racism and force used towards Black people that angers the country.
As the video continues, her passion intensifies and she can barely contain her emotion. She feels anger that the same people that swore to serve and protect are the people who will gun down a Black person for no reason.
“How dare you stand next to me in the same uniform and murder somebody,” Jones shouts, “you have no business in that uniform, take it off.”
After posting the video, Jones’s response went viral and received a large amount of comments and support. Many call Jones a “true officer” and wish there were more like her. Others went on to thank Jones for being brave enough to post such an honest response to a horrific tragedy.
