Disgusting: White Boys Arrested With BB Guns Told to Write Essay on Tamir Rice

The boys' treatment shows the horrible racial double standard when it comes to police.

The story of 12 year-old Tamir Rice still haunts us all. The young boy was shot by a police officer who mistook his toy BB gun for a real gun. Now, to add insult to injury, a similar story occurred with an extremely different outcome.

Two white boys in Cleveland, Ohio, were seen playing with BB guns in February. The police were called as it appeared that the guns may have been real. However, after arriving on the scene, the police officers did not draw their weapons and shoot. Instead, they peacefully arrested the boys, a 12-year-old and a 15 year-old.

This week, the boys appeared in court for their judgment. In addition to paying the court fees, the boys were ordered to write an essay on Tamir Rice and how their situation was different and similar to his.

Although this may at first look like Cleveland's way of correcting the problems created in Tamir Rice's case, it really illustrates a crazy double standard.

These boys had an opportunity to hand over their weapons and get a sentence that was merely no more than a school report. However, for 12 year-old Tamir Rice, he was given no such option. He never had the chance to write about why he should not play with BB guns because his life was instantly taken.

This case further proves the existence and strength of white privilege in America.
