Dr. Brian Williams, a trauma surgeon at Parkland Memorial Hospital, sat down in front of reporters to discuss his experience operating on the officers who were shot. As he begins to talk, it’s clear from the video that Dr. Williams is torn between several emotions and responses.

“I stand with law enforcement, but I also personally feel and understand the angst that comes when you cross the path of a white officer and you are fearing for your safety,” Williams explained. “I have been there and I understand that.”

Dr. Williams then goes on to say that the killing of Black men by men of the law is unjust; however, the demise of the officers is equally unjust. He then went on to emotionally open up about the weight and guilt that he feels knowing that he could not save the lives of all the officers.

“I think about it every day,” Williams said, “that I was unable to save those cops when they came here that night.”

Williams believes that the lack of communication and conversations about race relations in this country needs to improve if we want to see real change.

Although he had one of the toughest jobs that night, Dr. Williams is incredibly respected and appreciated for all the work he has done.
