The killing of Korryn Gaines, 23, and the shooting of her son, Kodi, has sparked national outrage and fiery debates. The situation surrounding her death caused many to question the actions of the police as well as her mental state.

It was confirmed that during the standoff, 5-year-old Kodi Gaines was shot in the arm by an officer of the Baltimore County Police Department. Kodi remains at Johns Hopkins Children’s Hospital, where is he receiving treatment for his injuries. 

Recently, while Kodi underwent a surgery for his injuries, the family members of Korryn Gaines waited outside the hospital. Police prohibited the family from seeing Kodi for several hours, which in turn motivated them to record an honest video from outside the hospital.

In the video, a cousin of Korryn and Kodi voices his frustrations with the shooting and the mistreatment that his family received from the police. He then delves deeper into his general disappointment in the systematic oppression of Black people.

The video, that runs just short of 10 minutes, captures not only the family’s anger with the death of Korryn and the injuring of Kodi, but it raises many harrowing questions about the constant difficulties of being Black in America.
