The wife of 31-year-old murder victim Rahim Cummings could not contain her emotions during trial on Monday when the man suspected of murdering her husband entered the court room

On Friday afternoon, Cummings was gunned down at a shopping center off Capital Boulevard in Raleigh, North Carolina. 18-year-old Javorie Ammon Thompson and 17-year-old Zyreek Avery Braxton were charged with Cummings’s murder.

Cummings’s wife, Canei Cummings, appeared in court on Monday. When suspect Javorie Thompson entered the court room and stood before the judge, Canei experienced a very emotional response.

“You killed him! You killed my husband!” Canei sobbed. “You took my son’s dad. Why would you do that?”

While officers of the court then led Canei out of the room, she told Thompson to “tell them everything.” Thompson then buried his head in his hands and avoided eye contact with Canei. After leaving the courtroom, Canei articulated exactly where the emotional outburst came from.

“He needs to hear my voice. He needs to know. He needs to see my face. He needs to know he tore a family apart,” she said. “I want everybody involved — every single person — to face what they need to face. They need to be punished. Everyone involved.”

Canei described Rahim as a family man who worked “maybe 60 hours a week sometimes” to provide for her and her son.

On Sunday, a vigil was held for Rahim Cummings at the Rollingview Falls Lake in Durham. Rahim loved taking his family swimming and fishing at the lake. A GoFundMe page has also been started to help cover funeral costs.
