Last month, a man in South Carolina was arrested for sexually assaulting and impregnating an 11-year-old girl. 

In February, the young girl told her school’s officials what she’d experienced. At first, she told officials that she was assaulted by someone her own age, because she feared letting her mother know the truth.

However, she later revealed Derrick Burris, an acquaintance of a relative, was the one who got her pregnant. The unidentified girl was first assaulted by Burris at age 10. When she was 11, he got her pregnant, and she delivered the baby in May, at age 12.

Investigators from the Special Victims Unit conducted DNA tests and confirmed that Burris was the father of the baby.

Burris was later arrested and charged with first degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

While at his bond hearing, Burris became very upset and stormed out of the room.

“I waive my rights,” said Derrick Burris and he got up and started to walk out of the room.

“Shut up, don’t talk in here,” said the unidentified judge.

“I waive my rights,” Burris continued as he walked out.

“He’s not going to get bond anyway,” the judge said about Burris, who exited the room. “I can’t set bond on anything that carries up to life in prison.”

Burris was denied bond and must now go before a circuit court judge. If convicted he faces 25 years to life in prison.
