A high school in Florida opened an investigation after two handwritten signs labeled “Colored” and “Whites only” appeared above water fountains on Thursday.

Duval district officials say they are still investigating the incident, which occurred at First Coast High School in Jacksonville. They are still unsure of which students were involved.

‎”The signs placed on top of the fountains are completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated by our school district,” Superintendent Nikolai Vitti told the Florida Times Union. “We are investigating the matter to determine who is behind the action to provide the appropriate discipline and counseling.”

Officials said school staff took the loose-leaf paper signs down once they were reported. However, photos of the fountains quickly appeared on social media.

‘There have been racial issues in the past; there’s always been,” said Tommy Johnston, a 1991 grad and parent of two graduates. “Parents just keep pushing that into their kids. I don’t understand it.”

According to Johnston, tensions arose when the school opened in the '90s and parents feared too many Black students would change the area.

Although Johnston — who is white — has never seen any signs like this in the past, he thinks it probably came as a result of the presidential election.

If Johnston is correct, this would not be the first racist act of hate to occur after Donald Trump won the election. In fact, the country has seen a rise in white nationalist behavior since the election — particularly among children.
