Mike Pence Slammed by Trey Songz and Others for 'Giving Props to the White Man' in #BHM Tweet Celebrating the 13th Amendment

The end of slavery started the systematic imprisonment of Black bodies.
  • To celebrate the beginning of Black History Month, Vice President Mike Pence's Twitter account sent out a tweet that seemed to forget about the Black component of Black History Month

In the tweet sent out by the official account of the vice president, no actual Black history was discussed. Instead, the tweet paid remembrance to Abraham Lincoln for submitting the 13th Amendment, which ended slavery.

Although enslaved Black people were freed by the amendment, there were additional provisions in the amendment that proved to be extremely detrimental to Black Americans.

  • Singer Trey Songz called out the veep for referencing an amendment that also led to mass incarceration of Black people

  • Ava Duvernay's documentary, '13th,' chronicled the clauses in the amendment which led to the jailing of freed Black people

  • And people followed Trey Songz's lead and called out Pence for referencing a white person for #BHM

  • And many applauded the singer for calling attention to the vice president's tweet

  • Based on the tweet, it's clear that whoever sent the tweet from the veep's account is unfamiliar with actual Black history (much like our president)

  • The insulting tweet eventually inspired the hashtag #penceblackhistory to trend

Although we are only two days into the historical month, it appears Trump's administration will be celebrating our history by not celebrating our history.

    Shocking.
