Democrats and Republicans Call for Jeff Sessions to 'Recuse or Resign' for Reportedly Lying About Meeting With Russians During Election
Here's what the attorney general said in response.
According to a report from Justice Department officials, Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke with the Russians during the 2016 election — an allegation he formerly denied. Last year, then-Senator Sessions (R-Ala.) spoke with Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Justice Department officials said.
During one of the meetings, Sessions met privately with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in the senator’s office, reported the Washington Post. According to U.S. intelligence, the September meeting between Sessions and Kislyak occurred during the peak of a Russian cyber campaign to influence the U.S. presidential election.
However, during Sessions's confirmation hearing, he denied having any contact with Russia
Amidst reports of his involvement with Russian communication, Democratic leaders have called for him to resign
Several Republican leaders have also suggested that he should recuse himself from any investigation dealing with Russian interference
When reporters caught up with Sessions, he claimed that he will recuse himself 'whenever it's appropriate'
