This Article On The "Cash Me Ousside" Teen Has Sparked An Intense Debate About White Women's Privilege

The piece leaves out the cultural appropriation Danielle Bregoli used to ascend to her fame.

The “Cash Me Ousside” girl has gone from the Dr. Phil show to an Internet meme to now charging $40,000 for meet-and-greet appearances at festivals and shows.

  • Danielle Bregoli isn’t the first person to get famous from a viral video. She’s also not the first to take advantage of white privilege and/or mediocrity to cash in. That was something that perhaps was missed in a recent Buzzfeed article that attempted to track Bregoli’s staircase to Internet fame.

The piece cites everything from her initial appearance on Dr. Phil, during which she becomes combative with the host and audience (creating her now-infamous phrase) to doing radio appearances and the manufacturing of merch.

The title of the article is “How The ‘Cash Me Ousside’ Teen Defies Expectations For White Girls” yet does little in explaining how Bregoli’s whiteness benefits her. The description is also troubling as it lays out a narrative that the 13-year-old “goes against the way we want white teenage girls to act.” As if unruly behavior is unsurprising or expected of a non-white teen.

This caught the attention of readers – some of which pointed out the Buzzfeed article’s shortcomings and/or questions as to why Bregoli’s race was or wasn’t brought up.

“I'm pretty sure she's becoming rich and famous for badly mimicking black culture which is exactly the expectation for white girls,” a Twitter user tweeted. “Being ghetto is not black culture,” another person wrote.

Check out some of the reaction to the Buzzfeed piece below.
