Here's the Terrifying Anti-LGBT, Pro-Life, Anti-Immigration Policies That Would Make Mike Pence a Terrible Replacement President

And the Democratic voices who prefer him to Trump.

It's incredibly easy to hope for Donald Trump's time as president to end early by means of an impeachment. However, if such an outcome were to take place, understanding the policies and beliefs of the person taking his place is imperative.

Vice President Mike Pence was not known to many before Trump added him to the ticket in 2016. Yet, to the people of Indiana, his policies have shadowed their life in a way that makes it impossible to ignore.

Several of his stances on women's rights, LGBT equality and immigration would not appeal to many liberal Americans. However, his demeanor and experience in government have made him a favored option among elected Democrats when compared to our current president.

Here's where Pence stands on hot-button issues and how Democratic officials feel about a possible Pence presidency.

  • abortion

As governor of Indiana, Pence signed an extremely anti-choice abortion policy that banned pregnancy termination, even in extreme cases such as fetus “genetic abnormality.” Additionally, Pence's law also required that aborted fetuses be buried or cremated at the expense of the mother. However, the law was blocked by a federal judge.

Pence also led a strong fight to defund Planned Parenthood. Within his state of Indiana, so many clinics closed that an H.I.V. epidemic started in one district.

  • Immigration

Pence has sided with Trump when it comes to immigration, and he's fought against having Syrian refugees relocated to Indiana. Many of his policies for immigration from the Southern border do not include a path to citizenship.

  • LGBT Rights

As governor of Indiana in 2015, Pence aided in the passing of a “religious freedom” law that would act to protect businesses from refusing service to someone based on sexual identity or sexual preference. This meant that denying the services to LGBT people would have been protected by state legislation.

  • Trade

Pence's policies on trade are probably the most reassuring to Democrats who know he will be the only option if Trump were to leave office.

His support of the Trans Pacific Partnership and NATO sit easy with former Democratic White House aides.

“I think it’s fair to say that every Democrat I know would prefer a President Mike Pence, without hesitation,” an unnamed Democratic aide told Buzzfeed. “He would pass some very bad laws, possibly more efficiently than Trump will. But we would not be worried about nuclear war, the end of NATO and an unholy alliance with Russia, the dissolution of basic Democratic norms and principles, or the base-level stability and mental health of the world’s most powerful person.”

  • Response from democrats

Most Democrats appear to understand that Pence would be terrible for women, people of color, immigrants and members of the LGBT community. With their knowledge of how he would fail many Americans, how can they still prefer him?

    Simple. Trump is that bad.

According to a poll reported by Buzzfeed, 62 percent of Democrats say they prefer Mike Pence in charge of the country.

“I’d sleep easier with almost any other human being as president than Donald Trump,” the former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau told BuzzFeed News. “I’m not as worried [Pence] would accidentally start a nuclear war because some Breitbart lunatic floated a conspiracy that got under his skin.”

No one should have to choose between having a president that will start a nuclear war because of a Twitter beef or one that would possibly take away the rights of all minorities and marginalized communities. There is honestly no winning situation.
