Grandmother of Baby Girl Beat Into Coma by Teen Dad on Father's Day Says 16-Month-Old Is Brain Dead

Nylah Lewis remains on life support.

The grandmother of the 16-month-old girl, who authorities said was beaten into a coma by her dad on Father’s Day, is brain dead, according to her grandmother.

Nylah Lewis, who suffered from multiple skull fractures and bleeding on the brain, remains in critical condition at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, reported New York Daily News.

On Father’s Day, Lewis’s father, 19-year-old Shaquan Taylor, allegedly beat the baby while she was alone in his care. While visiting her granddaughter on Thursday, Belinda Lewis told reporters about the baby’s condition.

“My granddaughter is brain dead,” said Belinda Lewis outside the hospital. “My daughter is devastated. She's breaking down.”

According to the grandmother, Nylah Lewis was still on life support, and the brain damage will likely be irreversible if she survives. The baby’s mother, 17-year-old Tammy Lewis, remained by her bedside on Thursday.

Taylor spoke with the Daily News from jail and denied ever harming the child.

“I didn’t do nothing. I didn’t do nothing at all,” Taylor said. “Do you know what it’s like to be here for something I didn’t do?”

During questioning with police, Taylor claimed Nylah’s injuries came from a fall; however, doctors said the injuries were not consistent with a fall.

Police said Taylor texted Nylah’s mother on Father’s Day and said there was something wrong with the baby. Once Tammy Lewis arrived, Nylah was unresponsive. When Tammy grabbed the child and attempted to leave the apartment, Taylor chased her into the lobby where he allegedly knocked her to the ground, according to authorities.

On past Facebook posts, Taylor suggested he wanted the baby’s mother to have an abortion.

On Thursday, Tammy Lewis posted a video of Nylah on Facebook with the caption: “Wanna see my baby like this again.”
