The Department of Justice recently announced its plan to dismantle a program that investigates local police departments and releases public reports about their findings.

According to the Washington Post, the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, also known as COPS, will stop the Obama-era practice of investigating and publicizing problems with police departments through “pattern or practice” probes.

The DOJ’s civil rights division, who previously conducted such probes, will receive those responsibilities once again while COPS works towards “advising police departments on best practices, offering training and becoming more collaborative.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions heralded the decision as “a course correction to ensure that resources go to agencies that require assistance rather than expensive wide-ranging investigative assessments that go beyond the scope of technical assistance and support.”

This is just the latest move by Sessions to establish a more pro-police Justice Department. Last month, he reportedly, “reversed an Obama administration move to restrict shipments of military surplus gear to police departments.” Session reportedly said, “the previous administration was more concerned about the image of law enforcement being too ‘militarized’ than they were about our safety.”
