Black Lawmaker Sort of Supports Uncle Luke’s Bid - Former 2 Live Crew rapper Luther Campbell, who is running for mayor of Miami-Dade County, recently got some supportive words from a Black lawmaker and fellow Floridian. When informed of “Uncle Luke’s” candidacy Tuesday night, Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-Florida) praised Campbell, saying he’s done a lot for the community and that it’d be a good thing if he motivated rap fans to register to vote. “Never play people cheap,” Hastings said. “People said Arnold Schwarzenegger couldn’t be governor of California and Ronal Reagan couldn’t be president, so I don’t take actors and entertainers lightly. Different ones of them do well, some don’t. Luther is alright with me.” (Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images)

Anti-Abortion Billboard Depicts Obama - A controversial anti-abortion billboard featuring an image of President Obama went up Wednesday in the South Side of Chicago. “Every 21 minutes, our next possible leader is aborted,” the poster reads. The Texas-based group Life Always defended using the president’s image during a news conference, arguing, “Our future leaders are being aborted at an alarming rate.” But the state’s Planned Parenthood disagreed, saying the billboards are “an offensive and condescending effort to stigmatize and shame African-American women while attempting to limit their ability to make private, personal medical decisions.” Life Always was also behind the controversial billboard in New York City of a young Black girl that read, “The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb.” (Photo: courtesy Life Always)

Rihanna Happy the Chris Brown Restraining Order Has Expired - In a recent Rolling Stone cover story, singer Rihanna explained that she wanted ex-boyfriend Chris Brown’s restraining order eased so he could continue with his career. "It doesn’t mean we’re gonna make up, or even talk again. It just means I didn’t want to object to the judge,” Rihanna said. “Saying he has to be a hundred feet away from me, he can’t perform at award shows—that definitely made it difficult for him.” In February, the L.A. judge removed a provision that required Brown to stay 50 yards away from Rihanna (10 yards during industry events). Black Unemployment Rises - The overall U.S. unemployment rate continued its ongoing decline in March, dipping from 8.9% to 8.8%. By comparison, the rate for African-Americans seems more like a cruel April fool's joke. The rate for African-Americans increased from 15.3% to 15.5%. For African-Americans ages 16 to 20, the figure rose from 38.4% to 42.1%, the Department of Labor announced Friday. The figure for whites in the same age group, while lower by half, also increased from 21.3% to 21.6%. (Photo: Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

Obama Launches 2012 Campaign - On Monday, President Obama formally announced his re-election campaign on social networks Facebook and Twitter and in an e-mail to supporters. "We've always known that lasting change wouldn't come quickly or easily. It never does," he said in the email. "But as my administration and folks across the country fight to protect the progress we've made—and make more—we also need to begin mobilizing for 2012, long before the time comes for me to begin campaigning in earnest."
