Black Soldier Claims Death Threats and a Noose Hung in Room

While serving with the New Mexico National Guard in Afghanistan in 2009, Specialist Adam Jarrell said he experienced hatred not only from enemy forces in the foreign country, but also from within his own team. Jarrell, the only Black member of his platoon, told BET.com in June 2011 that he was constantly called “mayate,” the Mexican-American derogatory equivalent of “n-----,” and even found a noose hanging outside of his barrack.
