Rolando Cruz served nearly 12 years on death row for the 1983 rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in DuPage County, Illinois. Recanted testimony by a sheriff’s department lieutenant as well as DNA evidence and a lack of corroborated evidence against Cruz and another man implicated in the case would lead to the court acquitting Cruz in November 1995. The charges against the other man, Alejandro Hernandez, were dismissed as well.
