Leontyne Price
The opera singer, whose powerful soprano in her performance of Verdi’s Il Trovatore in 1961 wowed audiences at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City (she was also the first African-American to open a season at the historic theatre), was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon Johnson in 1965.
