An Evolving Issue

On Dec. 20, 2013, a judge in Utah struck down the state's same-sex marriage ban as unconstitutional. But less than a month later, on Jan. 6, the U.S. Supreme Court put the ruling on hold. The groundbreaking ruling comes after two June landmark decisions in which the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and extended federal benefits to same-sex couples legally married in their home states.
